New route directly from Coburg to PTBO scouted, ridden and added. See the Up the Middle page for the map.
Achievement Unlocked, Roads Scouted. On the first of June, in a circumferential manner, the Lake wherein one might once, in days of yore, have found Rice, was navigated.
This was done Deasil rather than Widdershins to provide for tailwinds on the homeward leg of the voyage. The route, for those who might care is here. The “Paved Roads to the East” route from PTBO to Norwood was ridden as was the (in-progress) “Up The Middle” route from Bewedly to PTBO. More Gravel Gremlins The previously mentioned gremlins have torn up the pavement on Division between Hwy 28 and Duro 5th Line (about a kilometer) and replaced it with gravel. Apparently it will be allowed to “settle” and then be chip-sealed at some future date when the stars align. Ridden yesterday (as was Sweeney Line) on 700cx26 tires on a classic steel road bike without much problem. A couple of tri’s on plastic fantastic were navigating it as well without too much trouble and lord knows what sized skinnys they were riding.
Gravel Gremlins Ah crap! The County has unleashed their road destroying gremlins this spring. Almost all gravel roads have been “re-graded”, a process that involves taking beautifully smooth dirt with strategic potholes that slow down jerks who would barrel along at 90 kph and covering them with an even layer of big nasty gravel. Conditions will improve as the roads get used, quickly on the busier routes, but it may be months before roads are as nice as they were. Some of the best roads, the most out of the way, may take years to recover.
Sweeny Line (hard-packed dirt between Old Norwood Rd and Division Rd) was ridden on 700cx25 tires this afternoon. No problems. Dirt’s looking very nice this spring so far, might just be smoother than the pavement on Old Norwood Rd.
